Frequently Asked Questions

There’s lots to think about when preparing to enrol your children at Best Start ELC! This list of frequently asked questions may help.
If you have more queries, or would like to speak to us, feel free to visit a centre, or phone (02) 4312 4014.

Enrolment, tours & waitlist

Join our waitlist first, then our team will contact you to guide you through the next steps. We’ll help with fees and subsidy info, required paperwork, and arranging a tour so you can meet the team.

Availability can change quickly, so the most reliable step is to join our waitlist and tell us your preferred days. We’ll keep you updated when openings become available.

Yes—tours are a great way to see the environment and ask questions. If you join the waitlist, we can also follow up to arrange a tour time.

We’ll let you know exactly what’s required, but we may ask for documents like your child’s birth certificate and immunisation records as part of the enrolment process.

The waitlist registers your interest and helps us match openings to children’s ages and requested days. Once you’re on it, we’ll contact you when a suitable place becomes available. We check in every 3 to 6 months to see if care is still required and to keep our waitlist updated

Many families join as soon as they know the start window they’re aiming for (even if days are flexible). Earlier is helpful because it gives us more chance to match your needs as places open up.

Yes—settling-in support is part of creating a confident start. We’ll talk you through what to expect and how orientation works when you’re offered a place.

You can request changes, and we’ll do our best to help based on availability. If you need to cancel or change a booking, we ask for two weeks’ notice in writing.

We care for children from 6 weeks to 6 years, with rooms and programs designed for each stage—from infants through to preschool/school readiness.

Fees & Child Care Subsidy (CCS)

Fees are paid two weeks in advance via direct debit (bank account or card), and statements/invoices are available through the OWNA app.

Yes—CCS is paid by the Australian Government directly to eligible approved providers to reduce the fees you pay.

You can use a CCS calculator to estimate your subsidy based on income, activity and fees.

Eligibility depends on factors like residency, immunisation requirements and activity (work/study/training), plus being responsible for paying childcare fees.

Recognised activity can include paid work and approved study, and some families may be exempt depending on their circumstances.

If CCS approval is still pending, families usually need to pay fees until approval is confirmed (then CCS is applied once active). Because situations vary, we’ll guide you on what to expect for your enrolment.

Inclusions can include essentials like nappies/wipes, bedding and suncream, plus learning experiences and (where provided) meals/snacks. We’ll confirm exactly what’s included for your child’s room and days.

Your current enrolment FAQ mentions a one-time enrolment fee per family that includes a welcome pack and entry fob details. We’ll confirm the current amount and what’s included when you enquire.

Absence rules can depend on CCS conditions and your family’s circumstances. The safest approach is to check Services Australia guidance and chat with us so we can explain how it works with your booking.

Learning approach (EYLF)

The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) guides learning outcomes for children from birth to five. Our program is aligned to the EYLF, supporting identity, wellbeing, connection and confident learning.

An emergent curriculum means learning experiences evolve from children’s interests and enquiries, with educators observing, listening and extending learning through play.

Educators observe and collaborate with children to shape experiences that are meaningful and engaging, then document learning outcomes in ways families can understand.

We tailor experiences to each child’s interests and developmental stage, so learning feels relevant, motivating and supportive.

Yes—STEM experiences are included as part of our learning program, supporting curiosity and problem-solving through hands-on play.

Wellbeing is part of our holistic approach, and mindfulness is listed as one of our program elements.

We use a centre-to-family communication platform where families can view photos, stories and learning outcomes.

Our values include Growth, Connection, Kindness, Respect, Curiosity and Fun, shaping how we support children and families.

We aim for an inclusive environment and include experiences such as cultural celebrations. We also acknowledge the Darkinjung people as Traditional Custodians.

Daily routine

Routines include age-appropriate meal/snack times, rest periods and indoor/outdoor experiences, designed to support security and independence.

Rest is built into the day in a calm, age-appropriate way. We’ll discuss your child’s sleep needs and how we can align rest routines with home as closely as possible.

Yes—nappies and wipes are listed in what we provide.

Bring a water bottle, spare labelled clothes, and for babies, bottles for formula or breastmilk (plus any items discussed in your enrolment pack).

Your enrolment FAQs list inclusions such as high quality baby formula (for children under 2 years), alongside nappies/wipes, bedding and meals/snacks.

Often, comfort items help children settle—especially in the early weeks. We’ll work with you on safe, practical routines for dummies/comforters suited to your child’s age.

Yes—nutrition is a key part of the day, and we provide meals/snacks as part of our inclusions.

Yes—we accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies so children can enjoy meals safely.

We aim to build healthy habits through nutritious menus and hands-on experiences like gardening and cooking classes.
